On Tuesday, the Republican-dominated Texas House of Representatives passed SB 4, which qualifies border crossing without documents as a state offense and demands that state justices order the return of aliens to Mexican soil so as not to expose them to prosecution in the United States.
If the alien disobeys the judge’s order or has a criminal record, the crime becomes a felony and carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
The Mexican government noted that it “recognizes the sovereign right of any country to decide” the public policies that should be carried out on its territory, but “respectfully expresses its legal right to protect the rights of its fellow citizens in the United States, as well as set your own admission policy on your territory“.
In this sense, he added, “we categorically reject any measures that allow state or local authorities to detain and return citizens or aliens to Mexican territory.”
