Vela, the IoT platform developed by Xiaomi, opens

To strengthen its position in the Internet of Things (IoT) field, Xiaomi officially announced the update of the Xiaomi Vela IoT software platform at the Xiaomi IoT 2023 Eco-Partner Conference. It is noteworthy that the Xiaomi Vela software platform was announced in 2020, but the company has now made it open source. This was announced by Lu Weibing, partner and president of Xiaomi Group, and Zeng Xuezhong, senior vice president and president of Xiaomi Group’s mobile phone division.

Xiaomi Vela requires less system resources than Linux

Zeng Xuezhong, “How to Create a Thriving IoT Ecosystem?” In his presentation, he explained that Xiaomi’s proprietary system, Vela, is now open source for global software and hardware developers. Xiaomi Vela’s open source code is compatible with the Apache 2.0 open source license, allowing developers worldwide to use and contribute to this innovative embedded IoT software platform.

Built on NuttX open source real-time operating system, Xiaomi Vela provides unified software services on various IoT hardware platforms. This platform stands out by offering rich components and useful infrastructures for fragmented IoT application scenarios. Xiaomi Vela, in particular, provides similar features and performance while having lower system resource requirements compared to Linux, making it a cost-effective alternative especially for low-cost IoT devices.

Customization and compatibility

Developers choosing Xiaomi Vela can enjoy the benefits of lower hardware costs and improved overall product value. Thanks to the compatibility provided through the POSIX interface, existing open source libraries and components on the Linux platform can be easily transferred to Xiaomi Vela.

Xiaomi Vela, led by Fan Dian, aims to facilitate cross-platform developer collaboration in the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem. The platform, which currently includes smart watches, fitness trackers and smart speakers, plans to include other smart home devices, ISP cameras and sensors in the future. As part of the IoT ecosystem, Xiaomi Vela will play an important role in shaping the future of IoT technologies.
