Windows 11 users in the European Economic Area (EEA) will have more freedom configure your operating system. Microsoft has announced a series of changes aimed at ensuring compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), a regulation that has led Big Tech companies to update some of their apps.
The Redmond giant is supposed to allow users to “easily uninstall pre-installed applications or change default settings in operating systems, virtual assistants or web browsers that redirect them to Guardian products and services and provide selection screens for important services.” is trying to achieve this.
Changes DMA encourages in Windows
Windows 11 users in the EEA will soon be able to uninstall Edge. Let’s remember, Microsoft browser system default option. And although it allows you to install alternatives and even make it the default, getting rid of Edge is not possible, at least not through official channels. This will be a thing of the past when the update comes with DMA-related changes.
The Redmond company will also allow European users to disable Bing from the search bar and set up an alternative provider if they wish. This mechanic also allows you to remove news from the drop-down box on the desktop without affecting the widgets. These are elements that so far go hand in hand and do not allow them to be eliminated one by one.
Microsoft will also implement a global change that will not be specific to DMA-affected regions. We’re talking about eliminating Camera, Cortana and Photos. In this way, you will no longer need to use PowerShell console interface commands to delete these applications. Just do it like any other standard application in Windows 11.
These changes will begin to reach development versions of Windows 11 for now and will reach all users in 2024. We don’t know for sure when this will happen, but Microsoft guarantees that its systems (including Windows 10) will be compatible. With DMA on March 6 next year. We have to wait to see the news implemented.
