Israeli bombings in the Gaza Strip kill more than 11,000 people

Since the conflict with Hamas began on October 7, following an attack by the Islamist group that killed some 1,200 people in Israel, Israeli bombings in the Gaza Strip killed more than 11,500 people. and the destruction of much infrastructure, homes and residential buildings.

Likewise, some 1.5 million people have been internally displaced, most of them in the south of the sector. Israel and its almost complete blockade of access to food, water, gasoline and goods such as medicinewhich is causing an extreme humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, especially in its hospitals, many of which are not functioning.

“It is impossible to meet the current needs of the hungry with one operational border crossing. The only hope is to open another safe passage for humanitarian access for deliver vital supplies to Gaza“McCain said in a statement.

Last bakery in Gaza closes due to fuel shortage

Earlier this week, WFP confirmed the closure the last bakery who acted jointly with the organization because of lack of fuel, the shortage of which has led to “an abrupt stop in bread production in Gaza’s 130 bakeries” and “bread, a staple food for the Gaza population, is in short supply or non-existent.”

Fuel shortages are crippling humanitarian aid distribution and operations, including the delivery of food aid, WFP explains, revealing that “even when trucks from Egypt arrived and unloaded supplies in Gaza on Tuesday, they were unable to reach civilians in shelters due to lack of fuel for delivery vehicles.”

“People are starving”

“Without access to fuel, our ability to provide bread or deliver food to those in need was severely compromised, effectively bringing life to a standstill in the Gaza Strip. People are starving,” said Samer Abdeljaber, WFP representative in Palestine.

Of the 1,129 trucks that have entered Gaza since the Rafah border crossing opened on October 21, only 447 were carrying food, according to the UN agency, warning that “the volume remains sadly insufficient: the food they have entered Gaza has reached only 7 % of the population’s minimum daily caloric needs.”

“Gaza’s food infrastructure is no longer functioning; only 25% of stores contracted by WFP remain open, and others have run out of basic food items. Local markets are completely closed,” the note explains.

The situation of little food “alarmingly overpriced” and useless without the ability to cook forces people to survive on one meal a day: “for the lucky ones this includes canned goods, although some people have resorted to consuming raw onions and eggplants.”

“The collapse of food supply chains is a catastrophic turning point in an already desperate situation in which the population is deprived of their basic needs,” Abdeljaber explained. (EFE)
