The Guatemalan prosecutor’s office demanded that the immunity of President-elect Bernardo Arevalo and his “number two” Karin Herrera be revoked in connection with the seizure of the University of San Carlos, a protest against the election process for the new rector of the institute.
According to the ministry, Arevalo and Herrera would have been participated in the seizure of university premiseswhere prosecutors believe various crimes were committed crimes related to theft of cultural propertyillegal associations and influence peddling, Prensa Libre reports.
Likewise, prosecutors from the Property Crimes Department pointed to deputies Samuel Perez, Roman Castellanos, Carlos Barreda and Aldo David, among others. The institution said it would present the preliminary tests in less than 48 hours.
The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) confirmed Arevalo’s victory in the general elections last June, although prosecutors have tried in recent months to overturn the results of the vote and even to outlaw the party of the elected President Semilla.
Guatemala’s President-elect Bernardo Arévalo and his number two, Karin Herrera, have criticized Guatemala’s public ministry and denounced the organization’s crackdown on those who “reject” corruption.
“There is a persecution of those who, with strong ideals, have expressed their opposition to a system that favors a small and very insatiable group of corrupt people,” Herrera said at a news conference at the Human Rights Square in the capital.
The vice president-elect said that “what prosecutors are now presenting as an investigation only exposes a pattern we already know” of political persecution, and announced that her political party would continue to pursue legal challenges.
In turn, Arévalo noted that “there is no doubt” that an “authoritarian drift is forming” in Guatemala, since “absolutely illegal” measures have been announced in order to “intimidate” the presidential couple elected in the elections, as well as as deputies of their political party.
