Handbrake 1.7 is now available as a new version of the well-known cross-platform and open source video conversion tool. On this occasion, we will primarily find an extension of format support, especially with regard to the AV1 renderer.
Because we mentioned AV1, not to mention what HandBrake 1.7 brought. For this video format it is AMD VCN renderers to perform the process using Radeon hardware and NVENC to perform the same process with an NVIDIA graphics cardIn addition to the multi-pass ABR mode support introduced in SVT-AV1, the software renderer (processor) is mainly developed jointly by Intel and Netflix.
Continuing with more new features and things changed, added hardware presets for Apple VideoToolbox, updated Creator presets with detection and deinterlacing disabled to assume the user is working with progressive feeds by default, improved social media presets for higher quality and frame rates, plus the removal of email preferences in favor of revised social media preferences. Windows requires version 6.0 of the .NET Windows Desktop Runtime installed.
Continuing with other things from HandBrake 1.7, Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV) filters are added for rotation and formatting, improved performance in ARM64 and Apple Silicon thanks to faster HEVC playback with the latest version of FFmpeg and new optimizations of the SVT-AV1 assembly providing up to 4x performance increaseimproved conversion speed by removing unnecessary copies of frames for better memory efficiency, support for Dolby Vision dynamic range metadata and HDR10+ dynamic range metadata, improved QSV support on Linux, and NVENC support has been updated to not use multiple passes by default.
At the library level, built-in libdov 3.2.0 for Dolby Vision Dynamic Range Metadatawhich arrived with AMF 1.4.30, FFmpeg 6.1, FreeType 2.13.2, Fribidi 1.0.13, HarfBuzz 8.2.2, libass 0.17.1, libdav1d 1.3.0 (AV1 playback), liblzma, 5xz. libopus 1.4 (audio rendering in Opus format), libjpeg-turbo 3.0.1, libvpx 1.13.1 (video rendering in VP8 and VP9), libxml 2.11.5, oneVPL 2023.3.1 (video rendering and playback in Intel QSV), SVT -AV1 1.7, x264 164 r3107, x265/HEVC r12776, zimg 3.0.5 and zlib 1.3 as updates.
HandBrake 1.7 can be obtained from the respective download section of the official website for Linux, Windows and macOS. For Linux users, the official packages only come in Flatpak format, although they are open source, they should reach very current distributions like Arch Linux via the distribution repositories.
