Guadalupe Avila, a 67-year-old housewife, demanded the arrest of her son Carlos, a 27-year-old city artist, 19 months ago.

“We want Miss Universe to see that Salvadorans are suffering, this country is not what they were told,” Avila told Reuters, showing a sign with photos of her son and no criminal record.

El Salvador, which reported investing $60 million to host the international competition, is organizing the competition for the second time since 1975. (Reuters)
