The European Digital Markets Act continues to cause a stir. As expected, Apple has now spoken out in favor of some exceptions regarding its services.
As one of the current gatekeepers, Apple has strict rules within the EU under the Digital Markets Act. The company is now requesting some exceptions regarding its services. This is not surprising, it is not the first time that Apple and the DMA have been in the news together.
The rules apply to what the EU calls core services. At Apple there are 22, including the Apple Store and iMessage. In the latter case, whether this function falls under the DMA is already being investigated.
These are the two that Apple is now officially pleading not to include in its role as gatekeeper. The company is also said to believe that it should not allow third-party marketplaces on its iOS.
The Digital Markets Act will come into full force from March next year. Apple will then have to comply anyway. The company has already indicated that it will make adjustments to the App Store. A few months can sometimes be an eternity, in both technology and justice, and the last will undoubtedly not be said or written about the gatekeepers and their role by then.
