OpenAI’s board hired former Twitch chief Emmett Scheer as chief executive officer, ignoring investors’ calls for him to replace the ousted Sam Altman. Scheer resigned as CEO of game broadcasting company Twitch at the beginning of this year. According to one of Bloomberg’s sources, OpenAI won its position because it was aware of the existential threats posed by artificial intelligence. Scheer, a computer scientist who spent more than a decade building Twitch into one of the world’s most successful video platforms, is seen as the right person to lead a large engineering group.

Scheer’s appointment was the next step in Altman’s shocking story that shook Silicon Valley. The decision to hire Scheer drew defiance from investors led by Microsoft and Thrive Capital, who called on the board to resign and wanted Altman back. Another source told Bloomberg that at least two of the tech company’s top executives have been approached by the San Francisco-based startup’s board to lead OpenAI.

Representatives for OpenAI and Emmett Scheer did not respond to requests for comment. OpenAI Chief Scientist Ilya Sutzkever, who orchestrated Altman’s dismissal, informed employees that Altman would not be returning.
