Starting in June 2024, Google will no longer offer extensions for Manifest V2. After much effort, the company finally developed V3.
It was announced later than ever before, but Google will now replace Manifest V2 with V3 next year. That’s good news for Google, perhaps less so for ad blockers.
Last December, the Manifest V3 schedule was paused to process feedback (read: criticism) and fix the many bugs. We should have heard something again in March, but it was a little later.
As of Chrome 127, support for Manifest V2 is no longer available. First, the Chrome versions Dev, Canary and Beta are installed. V2 extensions will then be automatically disabled and can no longer be installed from the Chrome Web Store.
The general version of Chrome requires a slightly longer wait. Google provides a month to monitor everything and process feedback. The exact timing depends on the data the company collects during this period.
The developers’ biggest concern was that Manifest V3 would make ad blockers much more difficult to use. According to Google, there is now growing support for V3, thanks in part to an ongoing dialogue with ad blocker manufacturers.
Google particularly emphasizes that Manifest V3 is intended to provide more security and more privacy. The company also says it will continue to communicate with developers during the rollout.
