What happened

Last week, Media Matters, known for its investigations into misinformation in the press, published an article with screenshots from the social network X. 24 Channels. In addition to objectionable content, the images also contained advertisements for well-known companies such as IBM, Apple and Oracle.

Elon Musk responded by promising to file what he called a “thermonuclear lawsuit” against Media Matters and all parties involved.

What does Musk accuse Media Matters of?

The lawsuit filed by X accuses Media Matters of fabricating and manipulating the images published. Accepting that the images were not fabricated, X CEO Linda Jaccarino said that only a very small number of users saw Apple’s advertisements alongside such content.

The investigation found that Media Matters researchers artificially created conditions for ads to appear alongside questionable material. They used an old account without an ad filter, subscribing to accounts of extremist and corporate advertisers.

Despite a small number of users with overlapping interests, X claims that the manipulative nature of the research has led major advertisers to leave the platform.

X’s lawyers say the misleading nature of the study led to the departure of major advertisers, including Lionsgate and Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount and Sony, even if not directly mentioned in the material. A lawsuit was filed in the Northern District Court of Texas seeking $100,000 in damages, and X also requested a jury trial.
