Today is opening day Firefox 120, the new version of the Mozilla browser for PC (Linux, Mac, Windows), which if you have it installed and hasn’t arrived yet, it won’t be long, but give it a little margin because, as you know, things move slowly in the palace. In reality, the timing of these things is never clear, and while the release notes and downloads are now ready, the update is still delayed.

In any case, what doesn’t arrive sooner will arrive later, and if it catches you in Windows, you’ll hardly even be aware of the progress as it updates itself and in the background. So let’s talk about the new features that Firefox 120 brings, what it’s all about… although as usual, or at least as it happens more often than desirable, we face a short launch when it comes to changes or new important features.

But there are some new features, and in the official release notes, Firefox 120 launches a new copy option whose name says it all: Copy a link without browsing the web. You can find it in the context menu that appears above the browser’s address bar or on any link in text or images, and its function is obvious: it eliminates all “tracking information” from the copied URL. It’s nothing that couldn’t be done by hand in two seconds, but…

Works with all links, even if they don’t have tracking codes (most don’t)

Another new privacy-related feature that Firefox 120 introduces is the option «tell websites not to sell or share my data«, another option to the traditional Do Not Track located next to it in the application settings. It’s disabled by default, but if you want to enable it, you can find it in “Settings > Privacy & Security > Web Privacy Preferences.” But don’t be fooled: like DNT, it’s a request made by the browser and will only be respected by sites that play fair.

There’s more: fingerprint protection is improved in Private Browsing mode, and the same is happening as the cookie banner blocking feature, but only in Germany (why only in Germany, Mozilla?) and keyboard shortcuts have been added to edit and remove credentials selected in “about :logins’. Of course, this version comes with its share of optimizations, fixes and security patches.

Finally, Firefox 120 brings small improvements on a practical level: floating video windows, Picture-in-picture or picture-in-picture mode now allows you to snap windows to a corner by Snap, both on Windows and Linux (move the window while pressing “Ctrl” to lock it in place).

Well, one more, exclusively for Linux and almost Ubuntu: Firefox can now import data from Chromium if both are installed as Snap packages (nothing to do with Snap windows!).
