AMD promises better graphics in cheap laptops with Ryzen “Mendocino”

Ryzen Mendocino is the new APU that AMD has just announced at Computex. It is an accelerated processor unit that will be predestined powerful and cheap laptops or as the company says, “for everyday battle”.

The Ryzen 7000 desktop processors and motherboards that will support them were the star of AMD’s keynote speech at the Taiwan Fair, but not the only innovation. In addition to announcing dozens of ultra-thin and gaming laptops under the current Ryzen 6000 and – no less – 60 new laptop designs under the Ryzen PRO variant for professionals and companies, it also introduced a new chip aimed at cheaper laptops.

If you’ve been following the technology industry for as long as we do, you’ll remember that the name “Mendocino” was used by Intel as early as 1999 as a codename for its P6-based Celeron processors. Apart from the anecdote, this Ryzen Mendocino is quite similar to its own APU “Aerith”, which AMD created for the Valve Steam Deck pocket console.

It is an APU that will contain a CPU, GPU and memory controller in the same package and will be manufactured by TSMC in a state-of-the-art process node. 6nm. AMD decided to use the ZEN2 architecture and not the new ZEN3 for cost and consumption reasons, with four core and eight process fiber models.

The graphics part is of more interest because AMD has improved it compared to previous APUs integrated graphics with RDNA2 architecture which will allow him to run at least casual games. This new notebook SoC will work with LPDDR5 memory, which can be implemented in two-channel (64-bit) or four-channel (128-bit) memory bus configurations.

The rest of its I / O, connectivity and power optimization features are the same as the Ryzen 6000 series. Speaking of power, AMD promises that these computers will offer up to 10 hours of battery life.

AMD Ryzen Mendocino will be available in time for the upcoming holiday season and will be included with laptops such as the Lenovo IdeaPad 1. The retail price of this line of computers will be from EUR 399 to EUR 699 and will be able to work with both Windows and Chrome OS by Google. The price is not bad for the current level of the industry and it should be appreciated that suppliers remind users that they do not need or can afford the cost of more advanced series. It is also interesting to jump to RDNA2 to improve the graphics.
