Lenovo is going to war with Asus and wants to ban the sale of Zenbook laptops in the US. It is also filing a lawsuit against Asus for patent infringement.
Lenovo believes Asus is ignoring several patents related to hardware, software and connectivity. The Chinese computer manufacturer is therefore going for it International Trade Commission (ITC) in the USA. The result is a lawsuit with which Lenovo wants to ensure that Asus devices no longer end up on American shelves. The manufacturer is also demanding compensation.
The focus is specifically on the Zenbook Pro and the Zenbook Flip 14. Asus would install technology in these devices that speeds up wireless communication and makes the touchpad more comfortable. The hinge, which can be used to transform the laptop into a tablet, is also said to be made with proprietary Lenovo technology.
Lenovo itself states that the case is a response to an earlier lawsuit by Asus in Germany regarding mobile phone patents that Lenovo allegedly infringed. Lenovo says it wants a trade show Cross-licensing Deal as a solution and hopes for a fair and transparent license agreement based on the FRAND principle (Fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory). Lenovo believes that Asus is violating these FRAND principles (and in other words does not want to pay what Asus charges) and is waging war in the US in response.
