Lenovo’s US division has filed a patent infringement complaint against ASUSTeK Computer with the US International Trade Commission (ITC). China’s Lenovo believes that ASUS products are illegally using hardware, software and communication technologies.

The move comes in response to a similar lawsuit filed by ASUS in Germany’s Munich District Court in August 2023, involving cellular technology and with Lenovo offering a cross-licensing patent agreement as a solution.

Lenovo describes itself as a supporter of cross-licensing schemes and licensing of core technologies on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms. This position emphasized by the Chinese manufacturer was confirmed by the outcome of the legal process with the company InterDigital; The British court partially accepted Lenovo’s position. The complaint against ASUSTeK will help protect the company’s intellectual property rights, which include more than 28,000 patents in its 39-year operating portfolio, with another 14,000 patent applications pending.

Lenovo said it invests $2.2 billion annually in research and development and recently allocated an additional $1 billion to create innovative solutions in artificial intelligence. The company also reminded that it ranked 24th in the annual list of the 50 most innovative companies in the world according to Boston Consulting Group.
