Authors will no longer tolerate OpenAI making money from their work without compensating them. For the first time, Microsoft is also involved in a lawsuit.
It doesn’t stop for OpenAI. As soon as calm has returned to the boardroom, the next catastrophe is already hovering over the company. A copyright infringement lawsuit was filed in Manhattan District Court. Not only against OpenAI, but also against main investor Microsoft.
OpenAI is trained based on information from the Internet. Prosecutors assume that copyrighted works were also used without the authors receiving any compensation. Captain Julian Sancton, author of the famous book Madness at the end of the worldThrough his lawyer, he told Reuters: “Despite OpenAI and Microsoft refusing to pay non-fiction authors, their AI platform is worth a fortune. “This is nothing short of rampant theft of copyrighted works.”
Sancton isn’t the only one who believes his work has been copied by OpenAI. Other authors from the non-fiction world also share this opinion. Authors spend years researching and writing their books, while OpenAI is now worth billions and billions of dollars, say the frustrations. The indictment also names Microsoft guilty because of its “deep involvement” in training OpenAI’s LLM models.
Such fees are nothing new for OpenAI. At the beginning of the year, several novelists also went to court, including the author of the book series The Song of Ice and Fire George RR Martin. OpenAI has always maintained that it has not used any copyrighted works. The company has not yet responded to this new complaint, nor has Microsoft. OpenAI currently has other issues it is struggling with.
