The internal tensions at OpenAI have no impact on the collaboration with Microsoft. The software giant reiterates its trust in its AI partner.

It was also an exciting week for Microsoft. As a generous investor and technology partner, they closely followed the chaos at OpenAI in Redmond, although Microsoft remained relatively silent about the events. CEO Satya Nadella released a statement Friday evening, but his most notable move was the hiring of fired CEO Sam Altman and resigned chairman Greg Brockman.

CTO Kevin Scott and Nadella have informed their own employees about the situation at OpenAI. They sent an internal memo unearthed by The Verge. In it, both gentlemen express their support for Sam Altman and OpenAI.

“Despite the last few days’ potential to distract us, both Microsoft and OpenAl scientists and engineers have worked with undiminished urgency. Nothing has changed in our determination and focus to deliver the world’s best Al technology platforms and products to our customers and partners. As we have for the past four years, we look forward to continuing our partnership with Sam and his team,” said Scott.

Microsoft approval

Nadella had already given his blessing for Altman’s return to OpenAI in public media appearances. “We are committed to OpenAI and Sam, regardless of configuration,” Nadella said in his television interview. He added that he “chose to work with OpenAI, which of course depends on whether people stay there or come to Microsoft,” but also that he is “open to both options.”

Now that Altman has returned to OpenAI, everything is finally back to normal after a turbulent week. Whether Microsoft forced this return behind the scenes is a matter of speculation.
