If you’re sharing your screen during a Teams call and a photo of you cuddling with your cat accidentally jumps to the foreground, it can be embarrassing. If, during such a call, you have the code that you stole from your ex-employer clearly visible in the background while the meeting with this ex-employer is taking place, then you may well be ashamed. A certain Mohammad Moniruzzaman, who works at Nvidia but previously at Valeo, can speak on this.
Valeo is a French automotive technology specialist that, among other things, develops technologies that enable cars to drive and park automatically. This is a niche in which Nvidia also wants to be successful with its AI technology. Moniruzzaman worked at Valeo and moved to Nvidia in 2021, but not before secretly taking a lot of documents with him.
Nvidia and Valeo are also partners, so Moniruzzaman found himself in a video call with former colleagues in 2022. As he exited his PowerPoint presentation on the shared screen, these former colleagues suddenly saw Valeo source code. Valeodocs The folder name left little to the imagination. Valeo employees immediately took screenshots, which led to lawsuits.
The thief himself welcomed the German police into his office, where stolen documents decorated the walls. He was fined 14,400 euros, but that wasn’t enough for Valeo, which is now also suing Nvidia. Nvidia, in turn, claims to have known nothing about it and to have no interest in Valeo’s code. Conversely, Valeo points out that Nvidia was able to skip a lot of research and development work and that it is impossible to remove modified stolen code if it is integrated into Nvidia’s own code.
If you share something embarrassing during a call, you can have peace of mind. It was probably no worse than trade secrets that would get you a hefty fine and give rise to an international lawsuit.
