Astronomers at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile have presented a new image of the galaxy NGC 5364 obtained by the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) of the Victor Blanc telescope.

NGC 5364 is located 54.5 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Virgo. At first glance, this is an ordinary spiral galaxy, but everything is not quite so.

The fact is that NGC 5364 belongs to a rather rare type of spiral galaxy with a large design or regular structure. These cosmic objects are characterized by the presence of distinct and well-designed arms emerging from the centers of galaxies.

About 10% of all spiral galaxies are believed to belong to this type. They are considered the archetype of spiral galaxies due to their “ideal” structure.
