Lenovo held an exhibition at Tech World 2023, where Motorola presented a second attempt to develop the concept of a flexible smartphone that could be wrapped around the wrist like a bracelet, rolled up on a table, or placed on its own stand.

This isn’t the first time Lenovo’s parent company has mulled over the idea of a flexible smartphone. Megan McCarthy helped introduce a similar concept at her 2016 Tech World Keynote. Unfortunately nothing more came of this, but work on a phone that can be worn as a bracelet is clearly still ongoing, as evidenced by the update presentation at this year’s fair.

Few of the exact specifications have been released, but the latest concept features a flexible 6.9-inch POLED display with FHD+ resolution on the front. Instead of a rigid case, Motorola has fitted many hinges that allow you to bend the device from its normal flat position and accept different usage modes.

It is said to offer full Android functionality despite looking compact on the 4.6-inch screen when offline. It can also be converted into tent mode or worn on the user’s wrist like the Ritmo Mundo Reflex watch; users are promised “an experience similar to the Motorola razr 40 Ultra’s external display to stay connected on the go.”

Will the second time be the charm for a wearable smartphone? Motorola appears to be still exploring the possibilities, but you can watch Lexi Valasek from the company’s Innovation Research team demonstrate a working prototype in a time-stamped video here. It also introduced an advanced AI-based wallpaper design for fashionistas.
