Microsoft has added ChatGPT AI chatbot functionality to Windows Terminal as part of the Windows 11 Canary test build. ChatGPT’s AI capabilities in Windows Terminal can be used to generate commands, describe errors, and get suggestions on how to fix them.

Microsoft states that AI will allow commands to be explained in natural language and errors that occur during their execution. The chatbot will also suggest a solution such as an alternative command if the original command does not work.

The company added AI integration to the Canary channel last week, and it’s working as announced at the Build 2023 developer conference. However, this feature does not yet come with a built-in broad language model and requires a connection to the Azure OpenAI service. use it. The service is available by invitation only and API keys are chargeable.

To use the terminal chatbot, you need to download the application from GitHub and install it on Windows 11. After this, you need to enter the Azure AI service endpoint and terminal chat settings and save the data. The setting associates the terminal chat with the specified AI service (ChatGPT-3.5 or another model).

Chat lets you choose a suggestion from the AI and copy it directly to the terminal input line to preview commands before running them. Terminal Chat also recognizes the active shell in use and sends this context to the AI service. This allows AI responses to adapt to the shell environment such as command line or PowerShell, increasing the relevance and accuracy of help.
