Google Android Nougat support is slowly being phased out and older versions of your operating system. A few weeks ago we discovered that Google Chrome will no longer be updated for Android Nougat, and now it looks like Google Calendar or Google Calendar will follow the same steps.

The latest Google Calendar update makes a significant jump in minimum requirements, Switching from requiring at least Android 5.0 Lollipop to Android 8.0 Oreo. Additionally, there is a message (not yet visible to users) within the app that effectively indicates the end of backwards compatibility.

Android Oreo at least for Google calendar

A new version of Android comes out every year, although we already know that it takes a long time to reach most terminals. This is normal with space apps remain compatible with older versionsAlthough it is still necessary to set boundaries sooner or later.

Google Calendar’s limit will increase significantly From Android 5.0 from 2014 (nine years ago) to Android 8.0 from 2017 (six years ago). Google hasn’t announced this change yet, but version 46.0 already has Android Oreo as the minimum version, while versions 44.0 and lower can run on Lollipop.

This means those using a version before Oreo will be stuck on Google Calendar 44.0 and you will no longer receive updates. For now the app should continue to work as is with no changes, but at some point Google will press the close button remotely and it will no longer work.

We know what will happen then. flag hidden in the app when enabled displays a warning message “Your Android version is no longer supported. Please update your operating system to continue using Google Calendar.” Once it appears, we will not be able to continue using the application.

The latest Android version distribution data showed us: 93.7% of active Android devices use Oreo or higher, only 5.9% have a version between Lollipop and Nougat and will be excluded. This 5.9 percent will have to upgrade to a more modern version of Android or look for a new calendar app when Google stops supporting older versions.

For now Google hasn’t said anything, so the Calendar app should continue to work without changes, this is in older versions. It is normal for Google to provide advance notice before shutting down support permanently.
