Google Drive files mysteriously disappear, Google investigates

Several users report that files have completely disappeared from their Google Drive storage. This affects both personal and business files. Google is investigating the matter, but there is no solution for now.

One day your files are safe in Google Drive, the next day they’re gone. Last week, several users reported the same problem: months or even years of data disappeared without a trace from the cloud storage service. The first user to notice the alert suddenly saw their Drive environment rewound to May 2023, including files and folder structure. Other customers are now also reporting the same problem. Google has now pointed out that there is a problem with several accounts, although the extent of it is unclear.

Anyone affected by this will lose everything for the time being. Lost files are not in the Recycle Bin, nor are built-in recovery solutions able to recover the data. One user reports that a cache backup helped, but this solution doesn’t seem to work at scale.

Google encourages victims to contact us and be patient. Attempting to work on the folder structure yourself is not recommended while waiting for a possible solution, although it is not clear whether restoring missing files will be effective.

Cloud and backup are not synonyms

The problem shows that no file storage solution is completely secure. Although files in the cloud have a greater chance of survival than data that only resides on your laptop, for example, the cloud remains one place. If something goes wrong, as is currently the case with several customers, you are helpless without a backup.

Cloud storage is sometimes mistakenly described as infallible. Unfortunately, the reality is that backing up critical data is always necessary. This bug shows that very clearly, even though it is not the first time that customers have experienced data loss in the cloud. The best-known example is undoubtedly the destroyed OVH data center in Strasbourg, which disappeared in a sea of flames in 2021, although minor problems are not uncommon. A OneDrive update startled people a few years ago and a thunderstorm resulted in lost files after a lightning strike at Google in 2015.
