World’s largest iceberg could cause serious problems for millions of animals and birds

The iceberg, named A23a, broke away from the glacier in 1986: it then reefed a little and then got “stuck” in the Weddell Sea in West Antarctica. Recently, after more than 30 years, A23a started moving again and is drifting towards the Southern Ocean at a fairly rapid pace.

Researchers from the British Antarctic Survey examined satellite images and found that the position of iceberg A23a has changed significantly over the past few years. Scientists hypothesized that, like most other icebergs in the Weddell Sea, A23a would drift with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and reach the southern Atlantic Ocean. At the end of this journey, the same fate as the others awaits him; melt.

The area of the iceberg is almost 4,000 square kilometers. A23a is being monitored by experts from the British Antarctic Survey. They fear the iceberg will run aground near South Georgia Island, causing problems for the millions of seals, penguins and seabirds that feed and breed on the island.
