All Konashenkov’s secrets: Ukrainian hackers hacked one of the departments of the Russian Ministry of Defense

International intelligence community InformNapalm calls this system “the kingdom of the notorious Igor Konashenkov”; This man informs the Russians every day about fabricated reports coming from the front. The traditional phrase “no casualties”, which we have heard many times from Russian officials, belongs to him.

“Katyusha”

According to the source, the IT system infiltrated by hackers is called “Katyusha”. Among other things, it is an information and analytical system of online media monitoring. It was developed by the private company M13, which also provides its software to the President of Russia, the government, federal ministries and ministries, regional state executive bodies, commercial companies and public organizations. He has three systems at his disposal: “ARSENAL”, “ARENA” and “KATYUSHA”. Last It constantly analyzes the information space in Russia, collecting everything that is directly or indirectly related to news about the activities of the terrorist army.

Colonel Kochetkov’s reports were also found, which he submitted every week, reporting on the amount of materials released and the speed of implementation of plans.

In general, the system produces hundreds of pages of information. It is not clear who edited and checked it.

This video demonstrates the “Katyusha” system: video

Here’s what Katyusha does, according to the developer:

  • 24-hour media monitoring. The database consists of 40,000 sources: Russian federal and regional media, foreign Russian-language and “key” foreign media.
  • Possibility to classify information by time, topics, titles, named objects and types of mass media.
  • Assessing information quality based on tonality and audience scope.
  • Ability to monitor major Russian print media.
  • Monitoring of both traditional mass media and new media (social networks).
  • Output of key information events of the day, week, or selected period.
  • Detection of coordinated information attacks.

However, hackers discovered that the program’s list of capabilities is slightly wider. In fact, they are divided into “Positive” and “Negative” Telegram channels, that is, those who write well about Russia and those who express themselves negatively. I wonder what Igor Strelkov’s Telegram channel falls into the second category.

Similarly, in the “Armed Forces of the Russian Federation” tab there are more analysis options, and messages are immediately marked by tonality – positive (green color), negative (red color), neutral (yellow color). Here you can see important publications and events (i.e. the news with the highest citation index) and search by people and organizations (the system returns relevant news).

Special attention is paid to social networks. The system publishes in real time posts published in “VKontakte”, “Telegram”, “JJ”, “Classmates” and others. Facebook and Instagram are also available, but in very few numbers. Videos are also uploaded from YouTube, including Ukrainian channels.

The system also produces publications and statistics of individuals and organizations for the selected period.

But there’s something wrong with that

However, when we analyzed this system, we came to the conclusion that “Katyusha” is a kind of “Potemkin village”. It is clear that the DIMK of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation uses it for reporting. But the system clearly misrepresents the tonality of the messages. Negative messages about the Russian Armed Forces and the military-political leadership of the Russian Federation are either ignored or marked as neutral. It’s a kind of eye candy – “everything is fine, beautiful marquise”, no negativity about sparkling Putin or the military, no failures. This kind of digital Konashenkov is “patery neet”,
– writes InformNapalm.

The system mainly analyzes the Russian information space. Western and Ukrainian media are available in the database, but you have to search for them manually. They do not affect the overall picture. And any analysis is mostly based solely on Russian censored and self-censored sources. According, the value of such a system is only in the reflection of Russian information reality: The vast network of controlled media, coordinated waves of information, complete censorship (and even more self-censorship), the parallel reality created by propaganda can be perfectly followed.

“Yes, there was also negative news in the system. But for one negative news, the extensive Russian propaganda system publishes dozens of positive news, quite effectively diverting attention, shifting the emphasis. After the successful defeat of the headquarters of the Blacks, the Naval Fleet of the Russian Federation , in online mode on September 22, we personally watched how the Russian propaganda machine reacted quickly and adapted on the fly, creating completely different meanings.”– researchers add.

Solution to the mysterious “withdrawal” of the Russians on November 13

The files also contained data on the events of November 13, when Russian mass media spread and then canceled news about the alleged withdrawal of the Dnipro contingent group. Experts later disagreed on what it was. Ukraine announced that this was a special Russian intelligence operation and that Russia’s withdrawal preparations were not visible.

“We tend to share this opinion, with only one clarification. The special operation was not against the Ukrainian side, on the contrary, it was an attempt by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation to “catch” the disloyal negative Telegram. It is not difficult to find disloyal, negative content, for example, on the channel “Two Majors” of propagandists and criminals– Commented on InformNapalm.
