Amazon launches the Aurora Limitless database. This is a new capacity that makes databases extremely scalable without adding complexity to the customer.

Amazon is introducing the Aurora Limitless Database at Re:Invent in Las Vegas. This is a variant of the Aurora offering with a focus on scalability. With Aurora, AWS already offers a fully managed MySQL and PostgreSQL-compatible relational database built on a serverless foundation. Aurora can already easily process hundreds of thousands of transactions and scales resources up and down as needed. However, AWS points out that this capacity is not sufficient for customers in the financial sector or online gaming, for example, where the number of transactions per second can reach into the millions. Limitless should offer a solution for this.

Today, companies need access to their database for such workloads shards optimize so that the work is distributed across different database instances. This is intensive work that can keep developers busy for months and therefore requires a lot of time in maintenance. All work on databases must be carefully planned so that all instances continue to work together properly. Only then can the entire infrastructure handle the total number of transactions.

Everything in one database

Aurora Limitless Database puts an end to this way of working and ensures that millions of transactions involving petabytes of data can take place cleanly in one database. With limitless, AWS offers the simplicity of a single Aurora database while the solution can handle the same volumes as complex sharded infrastructure.

Limitless Database automatically distributes work across serverless instances and can easily scale horizontally and vertically as needed. Customers only need to manage one database and Aurora does the rest. Manual work that previously had to be done for dozens or, in extreme cases, even hundreds of databases is completely eliminated.
