A few days ago the alarm went off, Google Drive users have experienced file loss stored in Google’s online storage. Fortunately, from the outset, the number of users affected by this issue appeared to be relatively small. Of course, this does not reduce its importance, but it is reassuring for other users of this online repository.

But the most disturbing thing is this the cause of the problem was unknown, although Google has since confirmed the existence of the problem and that they were already working on it. And as a first advice, we could read that all affected users should avoid performing any actions on their Google Drive drives, as this could have a negative impact both on the investigation of the causes and on the desired recovery of files, lost files.

An important aspect that all affected users agreed on is that They have seen their files disappear for the past six months, something we can imagine may have led the company’s engineers to the trail of issues affecting the service. And in these types of circumstances, the date can be a pointer to when some type of modification was made, to a change in the code that is related to the same time range, etc.

Although the cause of the problem has not yet been definitively identified, The tech company found that the issue is limited to using the Google Drive desktop app, as we can read in Android Police. In addition, it provided a number of recommendations for users affected by the issue:

  • Do not click “Disconnect account” in the Google Drive app.
  • Do not delete or move the application data folder:
    Windows: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Google\DriveFS
