Netflix adds Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy to its game catalog

The concept of the “Netflix of games” has been around for so long that the movie and series streaming giant finally decided it was time to turn the metaphor into reality. I said it then and I say it today, not only did it seem like genius on the company’s part, I also considered it (and still do) the most daring moveas it made a significant difference to the services it competes with in its market.

It is true that its launch and development during the first months It was much slower than I would have liked.. Both in scope, as it was initially limited to smartphones only, and as a very small catalog, for a long time it did not have the appeal that we expected when it was announced and when the first titles began to arrive, that is, in September 2021. And yes, it is true that he adds new titles during this time, but still doesn’t seem to have achieved the notoriety one might expect.

More than a month ago though We had news of a long-awaited user movement, expanding the game’s reach to PC, smart TV and other devices, though it’s still in closed beta at the moment and only in Canada and the UK. However, we can only hope that its deployment will not take too long and users will be able to start enjoying this service as soon as possible, as it undoubtedly represents a great added value.

But it seems that the company has decided to advance not only in the scope of the game service, but also in its catalog and with a title that can significantly change its valuation. And as we can read on her official blog, Netflix Games will add Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition to its game catalog. The trilogy, which includes GTA III, GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas, will be available from December 14 on the iOS App Store, Google Play for Android and the Netflix mobile app.

Even the most beautiful rose has thorns and in this case I am worried about the choice that Netflix has made. Because? Well, because just remember the launch of this “remastered” trilogy (rather it should be said “demastered”) and how it was one of the worst releases of 2021, and therefore a terrible disappointment for all of us who were waiting for it with open arms. It’s true that some aspects of it have since been fixed, but today it still falls far short of what was expected.

Obviously, it’s Rockstar’s responsibility, not Netflix’s, to make a very popular move (and good for them), but thus entrusting the poor development with a qualitative leap, and which even today is still negatively marked by a large part of the community (and of course rightfully so), I consider it an unnecessarily risky step. And I really hope they turn out well, but I doubt it.
