AWS is developing an AI-powered image generator, Titan Image Generator. The tool converts a text description into a visual image, just like Dall-E 3.
AWS is stepping on the accelerator with generative AI announcements during re:Invent. On Tuesday, CEO Adam Selipsky announced Amazon Q, a smart virtual assistant that should make you forget about ChatGPT. On Wednesday it was Swami Sivasubramanian’s turn to introduce the Titan Image Generator. With this artificial image generator, AWS is targeting another popular tool from OpenAI.
Sivasubramanian gave a brief demonstration of the Titan Image Generator. It starts with an ordinary photo of a green iguana on a neutral background. After a few prompts, the iguana found itself in the jungle or on a beach, turned around and was no longer a green iguana, but an orange iguana. With Titan Image Generator you can also enlarge or reduce the same iguana, give it a cartoon-like look or replace it with a toucan.
You tell Titan Image Generator your wishes in natural language and the AI converts the text into images. If this reminds you of OpenAI’s Dall-E, then that’s not illogical. The image generator is available in preview through the AWS Bedrock platform, where the cloud provider’s customers can get started with a range of LLMs.
AWS understands that with great computing power comes great responsibility. Image generators can be used to develop deepfakes and spread misinformation. Therefore, AWS adds a watermark by default to every image created with Titan Image Generator.
This watermark is invisible to the naked eye, but not to machines. It is not included in the image metadata. AWS has developed an API that users can add to the model to determine the origin of images. The cloud provider also promises to protect Titan Image Generator users from any copyright issues.
Sivasubramanian also introduced two other new Titan models: Titan Text Lite and Titan Express, both designed for text generation. The first model can write smaller texts for you, Titan Express serves as the basis for a chatbot. AWS customers who prefer to use a standard chatbot can use Amazon Q.
