Samsung claims LLW DRAM is ideal for mobile AI processing

Samsung has introduced a special type of DRAM that it says benefits mobile devices when used with traditional DRAM modules. The company calls this new DRAM technology Low Latency Wide IO (LLW). This reportedly processes real-time data more efficiently than the LPDDR modules currently used in most mobile devices. The company says that with its lower latency, this particular type of DRAM is ideal for gaming and artificial intelligence applications.

LLW DRAM is located next to the processor inside the SoC

Samsung first announced this new DRAM technology in January of this year and followed it up with the introduction of LPDDR5X CAMM2 in October.

Today, Samsung shared a video showing the capabilities of the new LLW DRAM memory. The short video shows four types of devices: smartphones, laptops, gaming consoles, and related XR devices that can use them.

Galaxy S24 series probably won’t get LLW DRAM

While Samsung showed off its smartphone in the video, it did not mention the launch time or progress of this new technology. On the other hand, the upcoming Galaxy flagship Galaxy S24 series is also largely ready for this period and is expected to be released in early January next year.

Additionally, the LLW module is located next to the SoC as shown in the video. So the SoC will need to include this internally. As you probably know, Samsung has returned to a dual-platform strategy for the Galaxy S24 series. Therefore, they will have to work with TSMC to produce a revised Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 that includes this module. And it is unlikely that all this will be done secretly or in the remaining time. So users may have to wait at least the Galaxy S25 series to experience LLW DRAM technology.
