Now it’s official: Sam Altman is returning to OpenAI as CEO with a largely renewed board that will also include Microsoft.

Two weeks ago, then OpenAI CEO Sam Altman suddenly received his C4 from the board and was allowed to resign immediately. Altman tried a counteroffensive with investors at his side, but since OpenAI is run by a nonprofit, they don’t really have much say in the boardroom. After staff also sided with Altman, the council found itself with its back against the wall.

In a tumultuous week in which Altman appeared to be on his way to Microsoft, he was brought back on board at OpenAI. Now the company is also officially announcing Sam Altman as the company’s CEO and making significant changes to its structure.

New names

Three of the four original board members were fired. Only Adam D’Angelo, the former CEO of Slack, remains on board. D’Angelo is joined by two new members: Bret Taylor (former co-CEO of Salesforce) and Larry Summers (former US Treasury Secretary).

Microsoft has now also been added to the board as a “non-voting observer”. This gives Microsoft better insight into how OpenAI works from the inside. Microsoft is a major investor and owns 49 percent of the shares in the for-profit company, which is controlled by the nonprofit’s board of directors.

It is currently unclear who will take a place within OpenAI at Microsoft.
