NASA and IBM have joined forces to develop a basic artificial intelligence model for weather and climate forecasting.

As reported by Ukrinform, Metaverse Post reports this.

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and multinational technology company IBM announced that they are collaborating on a new fundamental generative artificial intelligence (AI) model for observing weather and climate.

The companies aim to join forces to develop a multi-modal baseline AI model that will predict meteorological events, provide weather forecasts, super-resolution downscaling, and identify conditions that lead to wildfires in a way that surpasses current technologies.

IBM and NASA expect the new AI model to have greater usability, faster inference time, and greater data diversity than existing AI models such as GraphCast and Fourcastnet.

Additionally, the new model will increase accuracy in weather forecasting and other climate applications.

In May 2023, the companies jointly implemented another basic model. Hugging Face used data from NASA satellites for geospatial analysis, the largest geospatial model in the open source AI platform.

This model has been used to monitor and visualize tree planting and growth in water-saving forest areas in Kenya and to analyze urban heat islands in the United Arab Emirates.

As reported by Ukrinform, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) plan to launch the world’s first wooden satellite into space next year.
