Archaeologists and volunteers discovered a collection of 6,000 silver coins and seven sword fragments during excavations near MIrov (Lake Mecklenburg). The history of the latter dates back to the Bronze Age.
Archaeologists in Mirov found numerous metal fragments and collected seven swords, according to officials.
Coins were found inside and next to the clay pot. They come from a variety of places, including West Germany, England, Denmark, Hungary and what is now the Czech Republic. This find is the largest hoard of Slavic coins in Germany’s post-war history.
Archaeologists believe that this treasure reflects trade relations in the 11th century. In addition to coins, the pottery also contained rings, a pearl necklace (composed of gold, rock crystal and agate) and two sacred items indicating the Christian faith of their owners.
The swords, estimated to be approximately 3,000 years old, were likely left in Mecklenburg Lake as a ritual or sacrificial gift.
