Blackbird Interactive has released the hardware requirements for Homeworld 3 and they are quite high from the minimum. If titles in the strategy genre tend not to be the most demanding on the hardware level, the specifications of this game suggest that this could be an important exception, especially in the RAM and graphics system.

Homeworld 3 is a new installment of the classic real-time strategy saga. Although it was originally scheduled to launch in mid-2023, it, like many other developments, has been delayed until next February. It looks very nicewas one of the star titles of Gamescom 2022 and will surely be included in the “most anticipated games of 2024” list.

Hardware requirements for Homeworld 3

The game will support the latest technologies from AMD and NVIDIA, FSR 2.0, DLSS Super Resolution and DLSS Frame Generation, as well as high dynamic range features as well as ray tracing, a feature not usually associated with strategy games. Perhaps that’s why the hardware requirements are quite high, more akin to triple-A action games than a genre that generally requires less, with the exception of Cities: Skylines II, which just faced heavy criticism for performance issues.

Even at the lowest graphics settings at 1080p, Homeworld 3 will need it at least 12 GB of RAM, which leaves out entry-level computers, which typically only have 8GB. The demands on the graphics subsystem are also high, although this is usually the norm for PC gaming. If you want an experience (at least a decent one), you need to invest in a mid-range dedicated graphics card.

The rest of the components are more contained, and at “only” 40GB of storage, it’s below the average of the latest big games, which go over 100GB without breaking a sweat, and once you’ve got four or five of them installed, you’ll almost completely take up the 1TB SSD.

All of the above applies to the game without ray tracing, as the game supports Ray Tracing and users who enable it They will need an even higher level of hardware. At the absolute extreme, to play in 4K, you’ll need a max profile PC with RTX 4080 or RX 7900 XTX graphics and processors like the Core i7-14900K. You can see the required hardware more clearly in the following chart:

Otherwise game it will only run with Windows 1o or Windows 11 64-bit, at least at launch, as a Mac version is also expected. In exchange for a hardware upgrade, the new installment will break away from simply managing fleets of spaceships from a bird’s-eye view, and 3D will prevail on the Homeworld classic battlefield. Another new feature will be a co-op mode called “War Games”, where players will engage in random battles with a progression system inspired by it roguelike.

Homeworld 3 will be available in February 2024, and – based on what we’ve seen in development – we’ll put it on the “wanted” list for the new year. Hopefully, the demands, high for what the strategy genre usually requires, are worth it.
