The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) plans to make the first landing of the unmanned probe “SLIM” on the Moon in the country’s history on January 20.

This was reported by NHK, as reported by Ukrinform.

A probe successfully landing on the moon would make Japan the fifth country to do so, after the Soviet Union, the United States, China and India.

JAXA is said to have launched SLIM from a spaceport in southwestern Kagoshima Prefecture in September this year.

Sources say JAXA plans to launch the probe into lunar orbit on December 25 before making adjustments to its flight altitude and orbit.

The agency plans to begin the probe’s descent to the moon’s surface around midnight on January 20 and land in about 20 minutes.

JAXA aims to demonstrate the high-precision landing technology of the probe, which is expected to land on the Moon within a radius of 100 meters from the targeted location. After landing, the probe will use a multispectral camera to examine the composition of lunar rocks.

Data obtained during the SLIM mission will be used in the US-led Artemis program, which aims to send astronauts back to the Moon.

As reported by Ukrinform, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) stated that hackers gained access to the computer system. They fear a possible leak of personal data of employees and other people.
