NASA and IBM join forces to monitor climate

Artificial intelligence technologies are becoming increasingly widespread and are finding application in various industries. Many companies are increasing overall quality and efficiency by using artificial intelligence in their products and services. While this trend brings positive developments, it also brings with it some concerns.

You may have come across claims that “Artificial intelligence will take over your job”. Meteorologists have recently joined the ranks of those potentially facing unemployment, as NASA and IBM are collaborating on an AI model designed to monitor Earth’s climate 24/7. Details are here…

NASA and IBM AI Partnership for Climate Observation

NASA and IBM are jointly developing an artificial intelligence model focused on weather and climate observations. This technology is expected to revolutionize current meteorological practices. While AI is already being used in the field, IBM says current models operate as task-specific and simple emulators, similar to technologies like ChatGPT.

But NASA and IBM are looking for ways to go beyond precise predictions. Their joint efforts aim to create an artificial intelligence system that monitors the world’s climate and weather conditions around the clock. Expected functions of this AI model include predicting meteorological events, extracting high-resolution information from low-resolution data, and predicting events ranging from aircraft turbulence to forest fires.

The common goal of both institutions is to increase the accuracy of weather forecasts and reduce possible disasters. For example, this technology can predict forest fires caused by extreme heat in summer in various parts of the world, including our country. Although it is difficult to achieve 100% accuracy, the artificial intelligence model is expected to be very useful in implementing preventive measures.

Based on data from NASA satellites and IBM technology, the integration of this technology into our daily lives remains unclear.
