An important event took place in New York on Monday: The last pay phone (automatic payphone) was removed from the streets of the city. Telephone booths used to be one of the symbols of the city, but they were unnecessary due to the widespread use of mobile communication.
The initiative to replace phones citywide began in 2014, when the Bill de Blasio administration called for proposals to rethink the service. City officials chose CityBridge to design and operate LinkNYC kiosks that offer services like free phone calls, Wi-Fi, and charging. In 2015, the city began removing street phones to replace them with LinkNYC kiosks.
“Just as we have moved from horse to cart and car to airplane, so has digital evolution moved from payphones to high-speed Wi-Fi kiosks to meet the demands of our rapidly changing daily communication needs.” Matthew Fraser of the New York City Department of Technological Development.
The newest phone will be on display at the City Museum of New York as part of an exhibition dedicated to the life of the city before the invention of computers.
