More than 11,000 turkeys slaughtered after bird flu discovered in Germany

About 11500 bucks were sacrificed after bird flu outbreak highly pathogenic H5N1 virus on a farm in eastern Germany, German authorities said Friday.

The disease was confirmed in Ostprignitz-Ruppin Farmin the eastern state of Brandenburg, the Brandenburg State Ministry of Health said.

November 22 is believed to be first case of bird flu in Germany this autumn.

Bird flu, which has killed hundreds of millions of birds in recent years, usually strikes Europe in autumn and winter. It has recently been discovered on farms in several countries, including France, the Netherlands, Italy, Croatia and Hungary.

To combat the disease, which has disrupted supplies of poultry meat and eggs in recent years and caused prices to soar in some parts of the world, France has launched bird flu vaccination campaign.
