Inmate accused of attacking ex-cop convicted in death George FloydDerek Chauvin stabbed him about 22 times with a homemade knife in an attack he had been planning for a month, according to court documents.

Around 12:30 p.m. (local time) on November 24, Chauvin was in the law library at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson when 52-year-old John Turskak assaulted him, causing grievous bodily harmaccording to a federal complaint collected cnn.

“Federal Corrections responded immediately and deployed spray pepper to subdue Turskak,” the criminal complaint states.

Turskak, who was charged with attempted murdertold corrections officers he would have killed Chauvin if they had not responded so quickly.

“Turskak said his attack (on Derek Chauvin) on Black Friday was symbolic of the Black Lives Matter movement and a “Black Hand” symbol associated with the Mexican Mafia criminal organization,” according to the complaint, which in addition to attempted murder charges him with three other charges, including assault with intent to commit murder, assault with a dangerous weapon and assault with a result of grievous bodily harm.

“Violations for attempted murder and assault intent to kill “The maximum penalty is 20 years in prison, and assault with a dangerous weapon and assault causing serious bodily injury carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona said in a statement.
