China is building the world’s first commercial underwater data center off the coast of Sanya, Hainan Province. This cutting-edge project aims to revolutionize the industry by harnessing the power of ocean depths, saving significant amounts of energy and land. With a capacity equal to the computing power of approximately 6 million conventional personal computers, this underwater data center could be a game changer.

The data center modules of the Chinese underwater facility are carefully assembled on the seabed at a depth of approximately 35 meters. Designed to withstand harsh underwater conditions, these modules are expected to operate uninterruptedly for up to 25 years. The waterproof storage modules weigh an impressive 1,300 tonnes each and are capable of processing more than 4 million high-resolution images every 30 seconds. When put together, the entire complex is estimated to have the staggering computing power of 6 million conventional computers operating simultaneously.

One of the key advantages of submerging a data center is that it can take advantage of the natural cooling properties of seawater. Using this innovative approach, the underwater data center is estimated to save a staggering 122 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year compared to its land-based counterparts. This outstanding achievement in energy efficiency demonstrates China’s commitment to sustainable development and reducing environmental impact.

Joint efforts for a sustainable future

The construction of the underwater data center is the result of cooperation between Sanya authorities and many well-known Chinese technology companies. The project is well on track, with the first commissioning of a data storage module in April and the addition of a second module recently. The ambitious plan aims to have 100 modules fully operational by 2025, which will be an important milestone in the sustainable development of data centres.

The motivation behind this pioneering project goes beyond technological progress. China is actively addressing land conservation issues by choosing an underwater data center. Traditional data centers can occupy a huge area, often equivalent to the size of several football fields. On the contrary, this underwater wonder takes up minimal dry space, saving space for other important purposes. Additionally, the use of natural seawater cooling reduces the burden on traditional energy sources, resulting in significant reductions in carbon emissions. This environmentally friendly approach is compatible with global sustainable development goals and serves as a role model for the sector.

Undoubtedly, China’s underwater data center is a landmark achievement in sustainable data center design.
