“This technology could be installed in booths in shopping malls where people could take a rapid heart rate measurement and then have it added to their medical record online,” said Professor Daniele Faccio.
The system developed by Faccio and his team includes high-speed cameras that can capture images at 2,000 frames per second.
A laser beam hits the skin on a person’s throat, and the reflections are used to precisely measure how much the skin rises and falls as the main artery expands and contracts during blood flow.
“Although it is a much weaker signal than other chest sounds, we use advanced computer systems to filter out everything except the vibrations caused by the person’s heartbeat. We know the human heart rate range, and the artificial intelligence focuses on that,” the scientist said.
