Apple highlights Smart Portrait Mode for iPhone 15

Apple introduced the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models in September 2023. While the basic design is comparable to the previous year’s models, the company has included significant feature updates.

Previously, Apple released a promotional video about the Personal Voice feature. Now the brand has shared a new video on its YouTube channel about the feature that uses machine learning to reproduce the user’s speech. This feature was included in iOS 17 this year. More specifically, a recent ad for the iPhone 15 showcases the Smart Portrait Mode feature.

Thanks to Smart Portrait mode, iPhone detects whether a picture contains people, animals or objects, and users can select it as a portrait shot. Even if the user takes a standard photo without using portrait mode, it will still work.

Smart portrait mode on iPhone 15

The commercial begins with the band creating a cover. One of the band members edits a photo of the trio, using his iPhone with Portrait Focus to focus on himself in the foreground and blur his bandmates in the background. The bandmate grabs his iPhone and switches it again, removing her from the photo and shifting the focus to her, blurring the background and foreground.

So, the video highlights the focus editing feature supported for standard photos taken on the iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro. You can use the slider to change the amount of background blur in the editing interface by tapping the aperture symbol.

This feature is available even if the photo was not originally taken in portrait mode. Tapping one of the people or objects in the image will change the focus of the multilayered image. Please note that Smart Portrait mode is available on all iPhone 15 series models.
