According to Taiwanese media, Windows 12 could be announced as early as June next year. However, we continue to wait for news from the Microsoft camp.
Will Windows 11 get a successor in 2024? It already seems to be next year’s IT question. The Taiwanese news media Commercial Times (via Tom’s Hardware) is already convinced of this and claims that Microsoft could present the new operating system in June. Commercial Times cites major industry names Acer and Quanta as sources, although neither company will comment directly.
So you have the feeling that the matter should still be treated with caution, even if it is certainly not the first time that the name Windows 12 has been mentioned. Even the chip manufacturer Intel has already sent the rumor mill into turmoil several times by talking about a “refresh” of Windows. Of course, these words can also be interpreted in different ways.
All rumors seem to agree on one thing: 2024 will be the year of the “AI PC”. Manufacturers want to release laptops that can run large AI models locally on your PC, so data doesn’t always have to come in and out of the cloud. Intel has already designed its latest Meteor Lake processors to support AI workloads, as has AMD in its Ryzen 7040 series. An operating system that fully takes AI into account must ensure that the PC user also benefits from all of the device’s specialized hardware.
So the PC industry seems to be preparing for Windows 12. The new version with AI could provide a further boost in sales. However, the only one who knows with certainty what the future of Windows will look like is still silent for the time being: Microsoft. Of course, a new version of Windows doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to buy a new PC immediately. Windows 11 still has many years ahead of it and Windows 10 will also be supported until the end of 2025.
