NASA’s Landsat 8 satellite recently acquired new images of Ertali, Ethiopia’s most active volcano. From the Afar language, its name means “smoky mountain” or “gateway to hell”.
Ertali volcano is located in the Danakil desert, lies below sea level and is a component of the so-called Afar triangle, a region of strong volcanic activity. The lava lake in the pictured summit crater has been bubbling since at least 1967, possibly as early as 1906.
During a recent burst of activity, satellites detected thermal anomalies in the summit crater from mid-September 2023. Since the volcano is located in a remote area and is practically inaccessible for research, scientists carry out almost all observations of Ertali based on satellite images.
