In eastern China, the world’s first nuclear power plant (NPP) with a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) has been put into commercial operation in Shandong province.

As Ukrinform reports, CGTN reports on this issue with reference to the National Energy Administration of the People’s Republic of China.

Shidaowan NPP is built on the coast of the Yellow Sea and is a purely Chinese project, so all intellectual property rights belong solely to China.

The prime contractors for the development and construction of the power plant were China Huaneng Group, one of China’s five largest state-owned power producers, the country’s leading university, Tsinghua University, and China National Nuclear Corporation.

According to the developers, the power of the nuclear power plant is currently 200 MW, and the level of localization of the production of its equipment in China has reached 93.4%.

Before official commissioning, the new nuclear power plant successfully passed the test of stable continuous operation for a week (168 hours) as required by the regulations.

More than 500 companies participated in the implementation of the Shidaovan NPP project. Construction work started in December 2012 and it produced electricity for the first time in December 2021, nine years later.

To equip the nuclear power plant, Chinese experts developed more than 2,200 sets of the world’s first equipment units and six new basic technologies for the operation of a nuclear power plant.

The nuclear power plant has increased safety indicators and various levels of fuses to prevent melting or leaking of radioactive substances. This ability will be maintained even in the event of complete loss of cooling capacity, without the need for intervention from experts.

The HTGR (High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor) reactor installed in Shidaovan is an advanced type of reactor, uses fourth-generation nuclear energy technologies and has increased reliability and durability, guaranteeing maximum safety in the event of an accident.

According to Ukrinform’s news, Turkey plans to put the first unit of the Akkuyu NPP, which is being built by Russia’s Rosatom company in the southeast of the country, into operation in Mersin next year.
