Geminis are without a doubt one of the most anticipated releases by AI fans and enthusiasts, as well as industry experts who are keen to see what DeepMind, Google’s AI division, has been working on. And no wonder, because Google’s image in the field of AI and especially generative LLMs depends almost fundamentally on this launch.
As we said at the beginning of the year, the launch of Microsoft’s new Bing took Google by surprise. Their original plan was to make big announcements at Google I/O 2023 in May, but first the big success of ChatGPT and the launch of the Bing chatbot just two months later, They forced Google to step on the gas, while plans have been activated to devote more internal resources to the development of AI-based services and solutions. So we’ve seen some interesting moves in recent months, but despite that, the search engine still needs to be a big success.
This is exactly what Gemini is aiming for, a multi-modal LLM that was already announced at Google I/O 2023, with which Google intends to overcome, based on this type of model, what the reference services currently offer, namely Bing and ChatGPT in particular, both based, as you already know, on GPT-4. And according to those who say they’ve seen it in action, it has all the makings to be the success Google so desperately wants.
A few days ago, we told you that the tech company was forced to delay its launch until 2024, probably at the beginning of the year, according to anonymous internal sources, due to problems with the model when using languages other than English. However, as we can read in Gizmodo, Google will introduce Gemini and its preview in a few days, maybe even before the end of this week. This way, and even though it’s only at the image level for now, you can start to capitalize on the recent work on the model.
When we remember a little, we remember itGoogle has already done the same with Bard, which was presented at the beginning of February this year, but was opened in a private and very limited beta version only at the end of March and publicly available only in May with an additional delay due to the debut in the European Union, where it did two months later, in July. Of course, these delays were influenced by multiple factors, some of which we can exclude in the case of Gemini, so we can expect its deployment to be faster.
