Venezuelan prosecutors have requested 14 arrest warrants for people allegedly involved in a “national and international conspiracy against Venezuela and the consultative referendum on Essequibo.”

This was the process by which the government of Nicolas Maduro justified the annexation of part of the territory that formally belonged to Guyana.

Prosecutor Tarek William Saab said they were opposing John Goicochea, Juan GuaidoJulio Borges, Andres Izarra, David Smolyansky, Carlos Vecchio, Lester Toledo, Savoy Handon Wright, Leopoldo Lopez and Rafael Ramirez, who were identified as operators abroad.

Arrests were also requested against Roberto Abdul, Henry Alviares, Claudia Macero and Pedro Urrucurtu, listed as “alleged conspirators operating from Venezuela.”

The prosecution wants to charge them with crimes related to treason against the country; CONSPIRACY; money laundering and criminal association.

Saab said Carlos Vecchio “worked for ExxonMobil from the early 2000s until 2007 and entered politics after ExxonMobil left the country; after not accepting the terms of the mixed companies created by President Hugo Chavez.”

He said that “there is a protected witness who is providing extremely important information regarding both national and international connections in this case.”

Financing

Regarding the origin of the funds used for the conspiracy, the Prosecutor General clarified that they occur “as a result of laundering the assets of international organizations and foreign companies such as ExxonMobil.”

He said the financing was realized through the crypto assets of Damian Merlo, a former US telecom businessman and former foreign policy adviser linked to Donald Trump and an adviser to Nayib Bukele.

Likewise, Saab said Merlot had contact with American Savoy Jendon Wright (already detained).

The investigation found that he used cryptocurrencies and large amounts of cash to circumvent financial controls and conceal the origin and purpose of the funds used.

The indictment accuses Wright of maintaining financial relationships with Claudia Macero, Pedro Urrucurtu and Roberto Abdul; leaders of the Sumate organization, “who, together with Henri Alviares, led destabilizing and conspiratorial activities.”

Thus, the prosecutor argues that “Guyana, ExxonMobil and, unfortunately, in the shadow of the United States, are working as one team to deprive Venezuela of territory that historically and legally belongs to it.”
