Apple is launching a new framework called MLX. This would allow developers to efficiently build models on an Apple Silicon.
At first, Apple seemed skeptical about AI. The company is currently quietly launching a new framework called MLX. The machine learning Apple’s research team allows developers to build models on the brand’s hardware, with a focus on usability and efficiency.
Designed by and for ML researchers, the MLX framework includes a range of features tailored to their needs, ensuring a streamlined model training and deployment experience.
The framework is now available on GitHub. Here you can read that MLX is inspired by frameworks like NumPy, PyTorch and Jax. One notable difference is that MLX’s design is a unified storage model. This means that every task run on MLX will also run on other supported devices (currently CPUs and GPUs).
Unlike competitors like Microsoft and Google that have focused on AI, Apple avoids the term AI in its presentations, preferring to focus on machine learning.
However the marketing department describes the technology, Apple is presenting a framework necessary to stay competitive in a world that can’t get enough of the AI hype. Both smartphone chips and competitor laptop CPUs suddenly support all AI workloads, and Apple can’t keep up.
