Digital Realty continues to significantly expand its data center infrastructure. Building four new hyperscale data centers in Europe and North America will cost $7 billion.

Digital Realty is entering into a joint venture with the American investment company Blackwell, which will acquire an eighty percent majority. With Blackwell’s capital, Digital Reality will build four new data centers in the coming years, two in Europe (Frankfurt, Paris) and two in the USA. The total cost of this investment is estimated at seven billion dollars.

500 megawatts

Digital Realty is the world’s largest operator of cloud and carrier-neutral data center, colocation and connectivity solutions. The current push toward generative AI will only increase enterprise needs for data center capacity. Digital Realty hopes to unlock an additional 500 megawatts of IT capacity in the four new data centers.

Of these, 46 MW are already under construction and 33 percent are pre-leased. The remaining capacity will be expanded in phases over several years. Twenty percent of the total planned IT capacity should be available by 2025, with the rest to follow from 2026 and later. Of course, the joint venture must first receive final approval. Digital Realty and Blackwell expect this to be completed by the first half of 2024.
