EU vs. cooperation

ENISA concludes a cooperation agreement with the American CISA. Collaboration includes sharing knowledge, best practices and developing shared capabilities.

ENISA, the European Union’s umbrella institute for cybersecurity, announces its collaboration with its American counterpart CISA in a press release. Europe and the USA have been allies in the digital sector for a long time, and now the cooperation has been officially put on paper. The agreement between ENISA and CISA includes three components:

  • Raising awareness and capacity building to improve cyberspace resilience.
  • Exchange of best practices for the practical implementation of international cyber legislation.
  • Systematically share knowledge and information to increase shared situational awareness.

Cybersecurity knows no borders

Closer cooperation between the European Union and the United States in the field of cybersecurity is urgently needed, explains ENISA in the press release. State-sponsored cyberattacks are now commonplace and cybercrime is largely a reflection of geopolitical relationships. ENISA must therefore choose its allies carefully and finds a like-minded partner in CISA.

“Cyber threats know no borders. That’s why international cooperation with our partners is a must. The working agreement between ENISA and CISA is an important outcome of the cyber dialogue between the European Union and the United States. This will allow us to effectively combat the escalating cybersecurity threats we face,” said Josep Borell, High Representative of the European Union for Security Policy (PSOE, Spain).

Same goals, different vision

Although the European Union and the United States have been on the same side of history for decades, they also have fundamentally different views on certain issues. For example, we think about data protection very differently in Europe than on the other side of the Atlantic. It will be interesting to see how the different views can be brought together into a coordinated, international approach.
